An Undergraduate
and Graduate Research Conference
Saturday, October 21st, 2006
Binghamton University Old Union
On Saturday, October
21st, 2006, during Parents Weekend at Binghamton University,
graduate and undergraduate researchers will participate in Sharing
Our Knowledge, a one-day research conference. These students
have served as research assistants working with Binghamton University
faculty on research conducted during the summer or academic
year. The sponsors of this conference believe that the best
way to capture student interest and to prepare them for graduate
or professional school is to provide an opportunity for them
to participate in research.
The conference will begin
with two seminars at 10 AM. The first seminar, “Research
as a stepping stone to Graduate School” targets undergraduate
students and will be led by two Binghamton University Doctoral
Students, Herby Dallard and Miguel Vilar. The second seminar,
“Ensuring a Successful Defense” is for graduate
students. The presenters of this seminar are BU professors,
Dr. Lisa Savage and Dr. Daryl Santos. Our lunch keynote speaker
is Dr. Lori Francis, Assistant Professor at Penn State University,
and a McNair Scholar alumna from the University at Buffalo.
This conference is free,
and open to the BU campus community, and parents. Students interested
in presenting must contact Sharon Bryant, CSTEP Director, at
sbryant@binghamton.edu, or 607-777-6184. The luncheon begins
at 12:15 PM in the Old Union Hall.

Dr.
Lori A. Francis, Assistant Professor of Biobehavioral
Health at Penn State University will address student researchers
at the Sharing Our Knowledge Conference at Binghamton
University during Parents Weekend. |
Dr. Francis is a developmental
psychologist with expertise in early childhood influences on
problematic eating behaviors and obesity. As an undergraduate
she participated in the McNair Scholars Program at the University
of Buffalo. She received her bachelor’s degree in 1997.
Lori Francis received her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family
Studies from Penn State in 2003. After completing her degree,
Francis spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow under the
guidance of Dr. Leann Birch, distinguished professor of human
development and family studies and director of the Center for
Childhood Obesity Research. Francis is interested in the factors
that influence the development of obesity in low-income and
minority children, including family environment, neighborhood
characteristics and socioeconomic status. She specifically focuses
on factors that influence how children regulate their own food
intake and body weight, and approaches to modifying family environments
in order to reduce or prevent obesity in children.
